Last month, I had the opportunity to present to members of the American Association of Political Consultants. My message to them was simple: do not be afraid. Take your shot. Put yourself out there. The only limits that exist are the ones you place in your own mind.
I have met countless people who want to grow, launch a firm, or expand their influence but hold back because they fear rejection, worry about competition, or think the timing is not right. Success rarely appears when conditions are perfect- it comes when you act despite uncertainty. When clients pull back, budgets tighten, or others slow down, that is when you push harder. Attend more events. Shake more hands. Hand out a hundred business cards. Use social media to tell your story. Show people what you do, what you know, and how you can help.
For years, my job has been to write for others, crafting their fact sheets, speeches, strategies, and coalition plans. I’ve built messages that influence policymakers, regulators, and communities. I’ve done that well. But I never did it for myself. That changed a few months ago when I started writing about what I observed in government and in my own community. The first articles had only a few views. But over time, those numbers have started to grow.
After 17 years as a political analyst for Univision and Telemundo, I have had the privilege of engaging with audiences and helping explain the issues that shape our state and country. But this time, I am turning that same focus inward. I am following the advice I have given my clients for years: build your platform, tell your story, and lead the conversation with purpose.
What got me to write this article was a quote I came across from Nick Saban: “What happened yesterday is history. What happens tomorrow is a mystery. What we do today makes a difference.”
That is the truth in our business and in life. Do not wait for opportunity. Create it. Go out, connect, and communicate, not just for your clients but for yourself. What you do today will decide where you stand tomorrow.
